Support Small Businesses on Small Business Saturday

Valerie’s Top 5 Places To Shop in Dallas

Over the past few years, more awareness has been brought to the importance of supporting small businesses by shopping locally. This year more than ever, it is vital that we support the businesses we love. Many of them are struggling, holding on by only a thread, and are counting on us this holiday season.

To do my part, I’ve put together a list of my top 5 places to shop in Dallas this holiday season.

Society Candle Store

Ok, yes, there are tons of jokes around people that gift candles during the holidays. However, I can assure you, these are not the usual candles that only smell the day you buy it.

Society candles are like no candle you’ve ever bought. I am OBSESSED with their unique scent options and the potency and durability of the scent itself. This store is owned by a couple of interior designers from Dallas that would make their own candles to gift their high-end clients on completion of home renovation projects. It wasn’t long before people started asking where they could buy more of these candles. This was the start of my beloved Society candle store. If you decide to visit, here are my favs.

  • The “Dallas” candle – They also have a Houston and Austin one, but I love the Dallas. I typically buy one of these when I have visitors from out of town.
  • The “Hudson” candle – I truly can’t have enough of this scent.
  • The “Office” scent spray (LAFCO) – I spray this around the Bold Entity office right before a client walks in. Not only do they look happy to be greeted with this beautiful scent, but they almost always comment on how wonderful our office smells.
  • The “Cabin” scent spray (LAFCO) – I keep this one in my car and spray it on my car mats. I can’t stop spraying!

Marcel Market

If you are not sure what to buy someone, this is the spot to go to! Marcel Market carries quite a variety of products: home goods, groceries, jewelry, desserts, and more. What they all have in common is that these products are imported from France and everything here is beautifully packaged. This is the place to visit if you are looking for a gift for someone with refined taste, or if you’ve decided to treat yourself with something you likely haven’t seen before.

Bisou Bisou

Ooh-la-la! Bisou Bisou Patisserie has the most amazing pastries I’ve ever had. If you or your loved ones have a sweet tooth, trust me, you have to come here. That is unless you are on a strict diet because once you taste their pastries, it’s difficult to stop. If you haven’t been before, may I recommend my favorites: the macaroons and pistachio croissants!

Warning: the pistachio croissant is hard to come around because of how popular it is. If you want to try it, plan on getting there as soon as the door opens. I am not kidding when I say that as soon as they open, there’s typically a line of people waiting to buy them all.

Harkensback

You could say I have a taste for flair, and perhaps because of this people often ask me where I shop. The answer is always Harkensback, I love the idea of theatrical clothing – that type that is incredibly dramatic. If you share my nose for fashion, this is it — the place where you find that amazing blouse everyone stops you on the street for and asks where you got it. I am not claiming that you’ll love everything here – but you will find something so unique that you’ll just have to have.

If you are like me and don’t ever have time to shop, I highly recommend that you take some time on the weekend and go visit Bishop Arts. Make it an experience – go there early, have brunch, then walk around for a few hours and finish off with an evening cocktail. This area of town has some of the most eclectic boutiques you’ll see in the DFW area and the best part? They’re all locally-owned.

Toy Maven

There is nothing more magical than walking into a toy store, no matter what time of year it is or how old you are. With the boom of e-commerce, some of us have forgotten what small toy stores even look like. What better way to relive this childhood magic than to visit one of my favorites, Toy Maven.

This gem is full of instructional toys, markers, stickers, and board games. Even if you don’t have any little ones to gift, going into this store transports you back in time and puts a smile on your face. I often go there and buy tons of crayons, markers, stickers, stamps, and of course, glittery things.

Bar and Garden Dallas – Spirits and Wine

This is my go-to place when I want to find high-end spirits that I wouldn’t find at the big box stores. The Bar and Garden Dallas selection of tequila, mezcal, and scotch are their strongest. But you can also find a good selection of wines. If you want some tried-and-true suggestions, here are my favs:

I highly recommend their boxed wine. YES! I know, but hear me out. This is not your average cheap boxed wine. I typically opt for this option when I am going to be entertaining large groups because it tastes great but doesn’t break the bank.

Stranahan’s Whiskey – This is one of my favorite whiskeys and made right in Colorado! Most people have never heard of this brand, making it a trendy and popular choice for gifts and guests.
